The SBS Corporation receives 80% of its funding from the Australian Government. SBS states their reason for a football focus is - "football (soccer) is the undisputed world game. It is the world's most popular sport, and is the highest-participation sport in Australia".

Sport Australia (Federal Department of Sport) states that the "Australian Government is a significant investor in sport. This investment is wide ranging and includes: helping our best athletes represent Australia; getting more Australians – particularly young Australians active in sport. The benefit to Australians from this investment is significant: economic, health, social and community."

In an open letter to Australian football fans, SBS commentator Lucy Zelic said "from the beginning, SBS stood at the coalface of Australian football; grafting, challenging, changing and investing in the game at a time when the appetite for football was virtually non-existent".

The coalface is not the the English Premier League, La Liga or Italian Serie A. The coalface is Australia's National Premier League - it is where future Australia Champions are being developed - and it is being ignored to our detriment.

For these reasons, SBS should aggressively focus on providing significant free-to-air and online streaming of the NPL and WNPL.
