As a parent of two children in the NYC public school system, I am asking for your support to help change the requirements regarding absences for middle and high school admissions.  As we know, ten or more latenesses or absences impact our child being accepted to middle school and high school.  Applying to school is stressful enough without having to worry about our children getting sick.  In addition, our children are already stressed about the whole admissions process. Parents will send their children to school sick just so they won't be marked absent which puts others at risk for getting sick.  While other parents keep their children home and have to worry about jeopardizing their child's future admission to school.  It is not fair to base our children's future on the fact that they got sick too many times in one year according to the DOE.  Recently, my ten year old daughter asked if she could go to school with 102 fever because she didn't want to miss too much school.  In addition, I got a call from other daughters middle school nurse that my daughter was sick and I asked my daughter if she could stay for the rest of the day so it wouldn't count as an absence.  Is this acceptable?  According to the DOE it is.  Let's change this rule, so we could take one thing off our list of worries for getting our children into middle school and high school.  If you feel as strongly about this rule as me, please sign this petition to make a change that should have happened a long time ago.
