We are in the midst of an ecological crisis where species are going extinct from our planet every day, possibly ones that have yet to be discovered or could be used in medicine. Experts estimate that we lose thousands of species every year, with many more becoming endangered, in what is being referred to as the sixth mass extinction.

In a situation like this, we need to look beyond "traditional" conservation methods like national parks or reserves and do all we can to save the species of our planet, even in urban environments that we don't necessarily think of as "nature." However, if you take a moment to look around, you'll see that nature is all around us even in a city like Houston!

Over the course of a semester, we (a group of 15 undergrads) have put together a Habitat Conservation Plan to present to Rice and the Arboretum committee.

It covers a wide range of topics, from protecting critical habitat on campus to reducing deadly bird window collisions, establishing pollinator gardens to save bees, and even decreasing the university's carbon footprint through sequestration efforts.

We ask that you sign this petition and voice your support for making Rice University a leader in the urban conservation movement, setting an example not only for Houston but for cities across country!
