Rice University Student started this petition to Rice Jones Graduate School of Business

Rice University recently announced its decision to implement a new undergraduate business major, with a finance and management concentration. However, they have announced that Rice University sophomores will not be allowed to switch to a business major. The reason: Rice University cannot hire professors to teach 2 new business classes by 2023.

Rice University has one of the largest endowments in the world at $6.48 billion and Rice is a top 20 undergraduate institution. Moreover, the academic job market has been over-saturated for decades, with acceptance rates for many professor positions at less than 1%. Thus, there is no shortage of professors, and there is no shortage of money. Are we expected to believe that, as a top university, Rice University cannot hire enough professors to teach business courses within the next three years, when thousands of other institutions have done so?

Rice Jones Graduate School of Business's mission statement is to "develop principled, innovative thought leaders in global communities." Rice University's mission statement is to "cultivate a diverse community of learning and discovery that produces leaders across the spectrum of human endeavor." However, this new policy directly contradicts both of these mission statements. We, as Rice students, are constantly told to be intellectually curious and push the boundaries of the unknown. However, even though many Rice sophomores are able to finish the business major, we are told we cannot, because Rice cannot hire professors in time for Rice sophomores to graduate. Budget and hiring constraints should not affect our learning, especially at a school as resourced as Rice. Is Rice's budget for hiring professors more important than the pursuit of intellectual curiosity for Rice sophomores? Is Rice's inept inability to hire professors within three years (as a top 20 undergraduate college) more important than the transformative impact the business major will have on Rice sophomores' careers with investment banks, consulting agencies, asset management companies, and dozens of other financial fields?

By implementing this policy, Rice Business has limited the careers of many Rice sophomores. They have shown that they are unable to use their unconventional wisdom to find a creative solution to this problem.

The primary proposed solution is to allow Rice sophomores to special register for MBA courses. Another proposed solution is to allow equivalent courses for Rice sophomores to fill the 2 courses that Rice is somehow unable to release before 2023. A third solution is to allow Rice students to take those two courses at another university and transfer them over. The last solution is to hire professors to teach those 2 courses earlier.

The goal of this framework is to show that there is a consistent demand for Rice sophomores to pursue the undergraduate business major and effect a change in Rice's unjust policy. If you are a sophomore at Rice University who feels this policy is unjust and would enjoy the opportunity to switch to a business major, please sign this petition.
