The past two semesters at Wingate University have definitely been unprecedented. Many students feel that Wingate University has not adequately accommodated them in light of the ongoing pandemic––for example, not extending a Pass/Fail option to the Fall 2020 semester. However, as students gear up for final exams, another change is evident: The cancellation of Reading Day.

Typically, Reading Day is a day between the last day of classes and the first day of final exams when students have the opportunity to finish up final assignments, study for exams, and recharge. Wingate students have persevered this semester despite the odds stacked against them––many are learning online for the first time, balancing work/school/family, and coping with the stress that comes along with a pandemic (and an election year!). On top of that, breaks for this semester were minimized and courses were accelerated. The best way to describe the feeling is having been "shot through a rocket."

Although Wingate University had planned to eliminate Reading Day in order to do away with Saturday exams, many students do not feel this is an adequate trade-off for a day of rest and preparation. Especially given that some students still have Saturday exams due to Saturday being an "alternate" exam day.

We feel that Wingate University should reinstate Reading Day for the Spring 2020 semester and subsequent semesters while maintaining that exams should not be administered on weekends. Most students agree that they would prefer exam times be extended by one weekday if necessary.
