Revoke the Life Peerage of Baroness Charlotte Owen of Alderley Edge

Revoke the Life Peerage of Baroness Charlotte Owen of Alderley Edge

The Issue

Baroness Charlotte Owen of Alderley Edge was granted a life peerage in 2023 during Boris Johnson's Resignation Honours. This appointment, however, has raised significant concerns due to her lack of political experience. Despite this deficiency, she is eligible for a daily payment of £332 simply for attending Parliament - an entitlement that lasts for life. It is crucial to note that the House of Lords should be composed of individuals with substantial experience and knowledge in politics who can contribute effectively to legislative processes and debates. The appointment process must be ethical and democratic, reflecting meritocracy rather than favouritism or patronage. We believe that granting such a privilege to someone without discernible political experience undermines these principles. Therefore, we call upon the relevant authorities to revoke Baroness Owen's life peerage as it does not align with the democratic values our society upholds.

What Can Peers Do?

Members of the House of Lords have the power to amend or reject bills. While the existence of unelected members being able to do this is overall questionable, it is even more outrageous that Baroness Owen of Alderley Edge is able to do this with her having done, as Alan Rusbridger of the Prospect put it, "very little of note".
