Nupur Sharma’s derogatory and blasphemous statement against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during a TV debate has ignited protests from Muslims across the world. Her remarks were hurting the religious sentiments and opened floodgates of physical torturous for demonstrators in India.

Several FIRs have been lodged against Nupur Sharma for her comments, and she is now named in several police cases. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), although an extremist political party, has now suspended her from the party, stating that it was “against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion” and stated that it did not “promote such people or philosophy”.

As Sharma has now proven herself an extremist individual who insulted billions of Muslims, the London School of Economics should and must revoke her LLM degree. The institution must not ignore the new wave of extremism she started and must not glorify her extremist views. Media outlets, especially nationalists and extremists, are hailing her as an intellectual with a special mention of her LLM degree from the London School of Economics.

No one has the right to insult other religions, irrespective of their social status or religious affiliation. This must be recognised, and action must be taken against her to prevent the promotion of extremism.
