Why this petition matters

Started by Tammie Neldner

In a Special Meeting on August 17th, 2021 the Lewiston-Altura school board voted to approve the Resolution for Health and Safety Measures for the 2021-2022 school year.

This allowed Superintendent Carman to:

  • select and implement different health and safety measures for the School District and school buildings
  • Without School Board action (the board doesn't get a vote).

Board Chair Brummer stated in the Feb. 14th, 2022 school board meeting that "Masks were done". When a parent asked if a vote was being taken he stated "Nope. It has already been decided."

  • We need to let the board members know we DO NOT CONSENT to them relinquishing our representation by giving up their voting rights.
  • We have to send the message that we DO NOT CONSENT to this practice NOW- OR IN THE FUTURE- so they don't try to extend this or pass it again for next year!
  • We need to send the message to the School Board and the Superintended we DO NOT CONSENT to a dictatorship in our school district and we want our board members VOTING on our behalf!
  • This petition will be used to publicly inform board members how WE THE PEOPLE want them to vote- and brought forward when it's time for re-election.

This resolution (listed below) gave Superintendent Gwen Carman The Superintendent authorization, after consultation with the School Board Chair and notification to the School Board to:

  •  Select and implement different health and safety measures for the School District and school buildings
  • Without School Board action (the board doesn't get a vote).
  • if the Superintendent reasonably believes
that prompt implementation of different health and safety measures is necessary,
  • and that constraints of time and
public health considerations render it impractical to hold a School Board meeting to approve the implementation.
  • The health and safety measures selected and implemented by the Superintendent shall continue in effect unless
and until the School Board, in consultation with the Superintendent and appropriate school district staff and public
health officials, deems it in the best interest of the School District and its students to implement different health
    and safety measures.

Names and zip codes will be included when petition is presented.
