Revise the Prohibited Items Policy at Beresfield Crematorium

The issue

Our beloved family, Hilton & Craig rest in peace at Beresfield crematorium, a place that should be a sanctuary for their memories. Yet, every time our family takes steps to personally decorate their resting places, the crematorium swiftly removes them - causing us great emotional distress. It is an issue that many other families can sadly relate to as well.

Beresfield crematorium currently has a stringent policy on items that can be placed on the plots. While it is understandable that certain items can pose safety or maintenance issues, many harmless items that families use to honour their loved ones are unfortunately prohibited as well.

This rigid policy minimises the individuality of each space and disrupts the grieving process for many who find comfort and healing in decorating their loved one's resting place.

A study from the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement highlights the importance of memorialisation in the grieving process, stating that it provides "a focus for their grief and a way of expressing their feelings of loss". Personalising memorial spaces has proven to be a significant part of this process for many.

We are not asking for a complete reversal of the policy, rather for a compassionate re-evaluation. There should be a balance that upholds maintenance and safety while allowing bereaved families space and freedom to commemorate their loved ones in their own way.

Remember, these aren't just plots of land. They are sacred spaces where loved ones rest and where those left behind come to remember, grieve, and heal. Let's make Beresfield crematorium a place that nurtures this process, not one that stifles it. Please sign this petition to bring about this much-needed change.
