Why this petition matters

Started by Kristy Cunningham

Current, dogs are not allowed in national parks across Australia. The reason provided is usually as follows “The sight, sounds and smells of pets and other domestic animals cause native animals great stress.” (Parks and Wildlife Service). Whilst this is a valid reason, there is no clear evidence to support these claims as true.

69% of households in Australia own pets which is an increase of 8% over the last two years (Animal Medicines Australia, 2021). With strong encouragement from the government to travel locally, it seems only reasonable to review the laws in place stopping individuals from bringing their dogs along. Whilst pet ownership has increased there has been a significant drop in visitation to national parks (Tourism Research Australia, 2020). A significant number of pet owners are no longer willing to travel without their furry companions meaning, unless the laws change, we may continue to see a decrease in attendance to national parks which ultimately puts a strain on the government’s resources and funding.

We aim to get in front of the council to discuss the options available and open the lines of communication to find a compromise to ensure the preservation of our wildlife whilst generating greater visitation to our national parks as a result of reversing the prohibition of dogs. With your help, we can start the conversation and find a solution!
