As a former design student I'm fully aware of how poorly the design department had been treated these past 10 years. We have won multiple regional and national awards. Imagine what we could do if students were actually provided the proper resources? I am extremely happy that I graduated before the west lake location became the design home. Working long hours in the middle of nowhere is incredibly unsafe. It's distance from the main art building is incredibly inefficient and hinders collaboration and inspiration for students.

Industrial design struggled with subpar facilities while housed in the basement of Riley Hall and managed to churn out multiple merit award winners and highly influential designers in the field. Instead of recognizing this rapidly growing capability on campus during the Renaissance of design in business, the studio was shoved to the corner of campus and lack of investment in the program has been a letdown for the talented faculty and students.

As an alum of the design program, I'm saddened to hear of the neglect of the program and it's facilities. While many of today's most successful companies, including Apple, Airbnb, Facebook, and Google are leveraging and valuing design to create multibillion dollar corporations, it saddens me to hear that Notre Dame is leaving it's students behind. Beyond the issues of creating a safe environment for their students, businesses started by designers have created billions of dollars of value, are raising billions in capital, and if Notre Dame neglects the value of design education they risk being left behind as potential students choose universities that are keeping up with the times.

Take one look at the Business School building and you quickly realize that Notre Dame can overpour it's cup of plenty to provide for amazing academic facilities for ALL it's students. This was a poor effort and an oversight on their part and should be corrected immediately! - ND BA Class of 2005

Design students are getting an incredible education at one of the best universities in the world. Notre Dame cares about its students and I am confident that when budget allows, this issue will be taken care of. Let us hope this petition will accelerate matters.
