Manaveeyam Street, Thiruvananthapuram has the unique distinction of being the only cultural street in Kerala for the past 15 years. It was in April 2001 that Kerala Govt. has opened Manaveeyam Street for cultural activities.
But it was learnt from media reports that there is a move to convert the street into a night eatery street as part of Gender park program of social justice department.
For the last 15 years, this street was used by people for cultural activities , with out any sort of commercial gain there of. It is simply deplorable to convert such a cultural space (the only one of its kind in the whole state) into an array food stalls.
Manaveeyam street is a small corridor just 200 meters long. As part of cultural program, folk songs , portrait sketching , painting exhibitions, street plays , cinema - short film - documentary screenings etc. is set up at various parts of the corridor. It is impossible to conduct these programs of the street stuffed with 7 food trucks and accessories.
Manaveeyam Street is one of the official venue of IFFK( International Film Festival of Kerala) film screening and every Sunday Chalachitra Academy is screening world classic film series also.
The wall paintings by the renowned artists including Sri Artist Namboothiri ,Sri Riyas Komu, and the saplings planted in memory of great personalites including Kamala Suraiya, O. V. Vijayan and Vaikkom Muhammad Basheer has to be protected.
Hence all like-minded people should join hands to protect the only cultural corridor of the state.
