Restore the National Hospital Insurance Fund for Improved Health Care in Kenya

Restore the National Hospital Insurance Fund for Improved Health Care in Kenya

The Issue

As someone deeply concerned and directly impacted by the state of health care in Kenya, I fervently call for the restoration of the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). Having witnessed first-hand how the current health system, SHIF/SHA or Taifa Care, has failed to operate according to the Kenyan constitution, I find it imperative that this matter be addressed immediately. The efficacy and funding model of SHIF/SHA have resulted in substandard and overly expensive medical care, leaving millions of Kenyans burdened and distraught. According to the World Health Organization, out-of-pocket health expenditure in Kenya totaled almost 26% of the total health expenditure, a clear indicator that the current health system is falling short of its purpose (WHO, 2017). We must remind ourselves that reliable and affordable health care is not just a demand, it is a constitutional right. Consequently, bringing back the NHIF and rectifying its shortcomings is our best bet to secure a health system that constitutes and enables a healthier Kenya. Please join us in urging the relevant stakeholders in the Kenyan government to take the necessary action to amend and reinstate the NHIF. Sign this petition today. Let's bring about the change we desire.
