PETITION IN SUPPORT OF THE RESTORATION OF AID AND INCENTIVES FOR MUNICIPALITIES (AIM) - SMITHTOWN (ST. JAMES)

As concerned citizens of St. James, a hamlet in the Township of Smithtown Long Island, we hereby submit this petition to our State Senator John Flanagan and State Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick.

Our once thriving main street is now populated by many vacant stores owned by absentee landlords.  Our sidewalks and roads are in a state of disrepair and we lack sewers, which would enable the town to attract new businesses and restaurants for our residents and promote tourism in the region.  Due to the downward trend of our community and business district, residents in the township thought there was a need for a change and elected a new Town Supervisor, Edward Wehrheim.  The new leadership team brought a strong work ethic and progressive thinking to Town Hall. He needs your support and cutting NYS AIM funding is a serious setback to the revitalization of our township and the accomplishment of the goals of our elected officials and the people that elected them!

We are distressed to learn that in the 2019-20 proposed budget for New York State, there is an unconscionable reduction in aid for the Town of Smithtown of $671,178.  With the support of Supervisor Wehrheim, there are several grass roots organizations in St. James who are working tirelessly to bring revitalization to our community and are striving to create St. James as the flourishing hamlet it once was, which will then drive economic growth.  The future was looking bright, and these cuts will ensure that our downtown business district, along with others, will continue to stagnate and economic growth will continue to be nonexistent.

The AIM funding that you have targeted is vitally needed to save our downtowns.

We believe it is your obligation as our elected officials to support all municipalities – all the struggling downtowns on Long Island and the taxpayers who have not seen their money spent on maintaining the infrastructure that is needed to promote economic prosperity. The AIM funding that has been targeted was going to be used to help us realize the dream of downtown revitalization and economic prosperity in the region.

It is not too late to overturn this decision and restore the funding before the final New York State budget is adopted.

Respectfully submitted,

THE UNDERSIGNED CONCERNED CITIZENS OF ST. JAMES
