Restore our Transit System to improve service

Restore our Transit System to improve service
Why this petition matters

Since 2020, residents of Dawson Creek have been using a transit system that is inadequate to serve the community. Before July 2020, buses ran from 8am to 8pm, 6 days a week. Now we have transit from 8am to 10am & 2pm to 5pm Monday through Friday. We no longer have service on Saturdays. This affects the community as they cannot rely on the bus to run errands, attend appointments, go to work, visit family, or volunteer in the community.
The only resource to change this is the Mayor & Council, who have failed to realize the importance of accessible public transit in Dawson Creek for those who cannot or chose not to drive. The bus also serves low-income individuals, families, and persons with disabilities along with seniors who no longer drive. It seems like City Council is making it seem that because of our choice not to drive, that it’s our own problem, and we shouldn't rely on the bus. Taxis are too expensive and eat away a large portion of our income as we are using them more often.
We want to see our system improved majorly; increased weekday service, return of Saturday Service. This is something that Council needs to realize that the bus isn't there to make profit, but to provide a service to the community. This Mayor has been in office since 2013, and only then in 2019 he decided to look at cutting transit. These transit cuts are hurting the city, and people are moving away because of it. While it may be devasting to see the Council do nothing about transit (like they have in the past), it seems like every time transit is brought up in Council meetings, they all think “not again”. This is an issue that NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED!!!
Mayor Dale Bumstead & city council, it’s time to wake up and see what people really want in Dawson Creek. We don’t really need outside companies coming in, which is still great, however you need to be more focused on the underrepresented in Dawson Creek. This group of people are your seniors, your low-income individuals and families, your persons with disabilities. These people are people who ride the bus and have long complained about the real lack of service in Dawson Creek.
