Why this petition matters

Started by Moses V

The teens of Anchorage, Alaska frequent the Z.J. Loussac library to find books for school, research, and reading for fun. However, teen underground has failed to provide conducive reading options. There are almost no classical books or literature that provides critical thinking. Instead, many of the books are filled to the brim with descriptive pornographic scenes. According to Alaska news sites, representation was given to the library board in the following are some of the passages that were found in bookstore at the sections:

”… hot imaginary boy lowers me down onto it … sweat glistening on his hairless muscled chest … but he wouldn’t just screw me … no, my future husband … makes love to me slow and gentle in the hayloft. With my ankles locked around his neck … I … hold on for dear life as he expertly brings us to the most mind-blowing simultaneous climax in the history of gay sex.”

“… it was hard for him to get inside me and when he did it was sort of ‘push, push, grunt, grunt, unghhh.’”

”… we press our hot chests, skin to skin, body to body … then our lips touch.”

It is also important to mention that the teen underground at the Loussac Library is ranged for children ages 12 to 18. So, there are 12 year olds being exposed to graphic sexual content in the library.

Additionally, in the children’s section of the library, there are dozens of books pertaining to the explanation and exploration of sexuality. The children’s section is rated for newborn to 6 years old that means that there are young children being encouraged to question and explore the sexuality. Some of these books include:

Jack, Not Jackie
Maurice Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress Jacob‘s Room to Choose
When Aidan Became a Brother

Though there are many parents who wish for their children to read this type of material and become aware what sexuality is, there are also many who would rather their children not to be exposed to this particular subject at such a young age. However, these parents are not getting a choice in what their child is exposed to or not. Instead, when they visit the library, they run the risk of their child discovering a book about gender related matters and become exposed to a topic the parents would rather have their son or daughter learn about at a later age. Basically, the issue is that parental choice is being taken away, and we’d like the right for parents to choose be restored.

A big reason I am writing this petition is because my younger cousin (who is around four years of age) was walking through the Library in Anchorage and saw a book she really liked. She picked it up and started reading it, but didn’t understand what the book meant. She came to her mom and asked her what the book meant. My aunt was surprised because the book included many graphic sexual scenes that she didn’t approve of her child reading. I don’t believe the Library desired for parents to fear walking into a library with their younger children. But my question is, Does the library agree with scaring innocent kids with all of these books? Can we trust our public library with our young children?
