Whether or not we would like to, our unpaid breaks are forced upon us if we work any more than 5 hours in a day. This includes our part time employees who only work 5 hours a day. Which means restaurant employees are not only losing hourly pay, but tips. Which is a significant source of income for most restaurant employees. This also means in a 10 hour shift we are forced to take two 30 minute unpaid breaks, which takes away an hour of pay plus tips a day. Many employees do not want to take these breaks as our companies offered breaks before, however we don’t want to lose out on the money made during these times. This also add staffing issues in our most busy times of the day because of the time we have to take the unpaid breaks. We should be able to choose whether or not we want to take a break, they should not be forced upon us. Some of us are already struggling to pay our bills, but with these mandatory breaks and no option to waive that right, we are going to struggle even more to pay our bills. This right was taking away from us with no option, or debate. Please sign our petition to help make unpaid breaks optional once again.
