Responsible Gun Control: Mandatory mental health screening. Stop, Before It Starts

In the United States, over 31,000 people die a year from gun violence and over an additional 66,000 are injured yet survive. According to National Institute of Mental Health, 20 percent of Americans suffer from at least one mental illness. Yet, the U.S. Department of Justice's report only 0.7 percent of gun rejections are based on psychiatric illness.
Under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, mental health records may only be released to medical professionals, health insurance workers and quality-control personnel. Virtually no mental health screenings exist to gain the right to bear arms.
Support stricter gun control by giving law enforcement and mental health professionals the obligation for independent mental health screening for gun permits so that horrific acts of gun violence are not a daily occurrence in American life. It's not the gun, but the people who are permitted to use them. Stop the violence before it starts.
