Residents, Voters and Decision Makers: Tell Your Orange County Elected Officials to DENY the Text Amendment to the CURRENT Comprehensive Land Use Plan
- Mayor of Orange County
Mayor Teresa Jacobs
To: My Elected Orange County Commissioners
Whereas: We are not against development. We are against changing the comprehensive plan and zoning that has been in place in this area since 1991.
Whereas: Big builder developers’ interests will never stop looking for ways to alter existing zoning ordinances to work in their favor to allow higher density living units and commercial space in the already established Orange County low-density rural settlements and rural agricultural land at the expense of the surrounding communities, road systems and resources.
Whereas: Any change to the existing zoning of one home per ten acres of land, much less the current suggested proposal of 4,900 living units and 740,000 square feet of commercial space will break the back of all supporting resources (roads, traffic, water supply, sensitive ecology of the land and adjoining river systems, established quality of life, etc.). This proposal is one that will be ever-changing.
Whereas: The 10,000+/- additional cars for the project’s residents, plus the added traffic draw by the 740,000 square feet of commercial space, combined with the years of construction traffic caused by the project will cripple the already badly broken main roadway and supporting arteries.
Whereas: The proposed project is far larger than the nearby Avalon Park project and is attempting to slide by the County Commissioners and Orange County Zoning board by asking for what is being presented to the county and local community as a minor text amendment change – but, in reality, its approval would readily pave the road for quicker and easier approval of big builder ‘s higher density requirements and goals to achieve their profitability desires.
Whereas: Approving such a big builder scheme would destroy the current Orange County planned environment for east Orlando and play right into the hands of big builders allowing them to continue down the path of dismantling the remaining 22 Rural Settlements already established in Orange County by creating large, dense developments in their place, thus, directly creating added urban sprawl, traffic nightmares and trivial unneeded retail space to further their objectives and leave behind any clean-up for Orange County and the residents to deal with.
Whereas: Approving such a large-scale project at the local zoning level, as the big builders are attempting, would be an irresponsible Orange County practice, in contrast to approaching the property as a large-scale project with the normally required engineering studies, watershed studies, etc., as well as strategic planning with Seminole County since they will be directly affected by the load the project puts on them due to the proposed property bordering Seminole County.
Therefore: As your constituent, I demand you vote against the Text Amendment to the 2010 Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
