BAN HOLIDAY LET HOUSES ON OUR LOCAL STREETS
My family and I have been living next door to a Holiday Let for the past 2 1/2 years, and it is a living hell!
We believe that these holiday lets have no place in our residential streets. They are, in effect, running a business without having to abide by any of the required regulations. Unlike hotels, these short term holiday properties are self-regulated, which essentially means no regulation at all.
Parts of Europe are heavily regulating/banning the likes of airbnb and stayz. These include France, Germany and Spain, to name a few.
We are not alone. People are rallying in Australia as well. There is a group called “We live here” in Melbourne. Their website is welivehere.net This group is currently campaigning to have the Victorian State Government change the legislation for short term holiday rentals. We believe that the legislation needs to change in Queensland also.
The party house legislation has been a good introduction, but this needs to go further to protect local residents from the impact of short term holiday rentals. In the past twelve months, there has been increased attention to this topic in the media, both print and radio.
Other local councils around Australia are looking at introducing regulations to prevent the outdoor use of ammenities such as pools, decks and balconies past 10pm, and applying parking restrictions, which will only allow as many vehicles as can be housed on the property.
We would like to give the residents of Mermaid Waters, Broadbeach Waters and anyone else on the coast that is being affected a voice, as WE live here! We contribute to this community and we care about our fellow neighbours and this beautiful environment that we get to call home.
Why should our children have tired parents because of the behaviour of next doors holiday makers. Why should we struggle through our work day, or even our days off or annual leave.
Included is a map of holiday let properties that we have found in our area thus far. This map is not exhaustive. The sheer volume is astounding and its growing fast.
These short term rentals are a business. The council would not allow, for instance, this many food or retail outlets condensed into such a small area, (Imagine a MacDonald’s every 60m in a 4km radius). This is of particular concern when this area includes our primary and secondary schools, day care centres and community kindergartens.
If you are being affected by the growing unregulated epidemic of holiday let/short term holiday rental properties in our local community, please make contact via the email below and feel free to share your story. We will be launching a website shortly.
