Dear Ms. Ballenger,
As you are aware during the past several years the cut-through traffic on Walnut Blvd between Ygnacio Valley Road and Treat Boulevard has increased exponentially. A significant number of neighborhood residents have expressed deep concern related to both safety and a significant increase in traffic volume.
We appreciate the efforts of City staff that have attempted to address these issues. After months of meetings and some limited efforts by the City, we believe the complexity of the issues requires a formal process that can address this growing issue; and one that cannot be adequately solved with the limited staff resource available.
The undersigned Walnut Boulevard / Walden / Cherry Lane residents are requesting the public works department budget for, and retain, a traffic engineering firm to conduct a comprehensive traffic study of the Walnut Blvd / Chery Lane Corridor. In addition, we would appreciate the opportunity to provide input on the scope of work of the firm and involvement during the preliminary stages of the study so our concerns are conveyed to the consultant.
We acknowledge there is no single silver bullet solution, and traffic will certainly never be reduced to what we used to see decades ago. However, we hope an overall comprehensive study by an outside consultant will help in developing commonsense solutions, budget priorities and manage our expectations.
We are aware the City is developing (or has developed) its budget for the Fiscal Year 2018-2019. We ask that this request is added to this upcoming year’s budget; or that the budget is amended, so we can take positive steps to help reduce the cut through traffic we experience on a daily basis.
We look forward to your response,
Walnut Boulevard and Cherry Lane neighborhood residents
