“Tiny Homes" and/or "Tiny Homes on Wheels” are currently not recognized as an acceptable legal form of permanent dwelling in the County of San Diego. Our community is facing an expensive housing market with a critical shortage of affordable housing. Tiny homes can serve as an alternative housing solution to address this real problem. It is not a one-size-fits-all approach, but rather an additional methodology to help address and resolve the homelessness and housing crisis facing current and future residents of San Diego County.
Why tiny homes? With their increase in popularity, tiny homes have been the topic of countless articles and discussions about how living a simplified lifestyle can increase health outcomes. The typical solutions for affordable housing are multistory high-occupancy structures, which require extensive planning and development costs. Tiny homes cost less to produce and maintain and can also allow for the creation of small communities with lower development costs, foster independence and positive decision-making of one’s own surroundings and bolster an individual’s pride given their autonomous home occupancy.
For the purpose of this petition, tiny homes are defined as self-contained housing units under 400 square feet. Despite its small size, each home has a kitchen, bathroom, sleeping space and living room thanks to advances in smart design.
