Notwithstanding the fact that I am fully aware of the valuable role food banks play in our world, I am of the opinion that relocating a BUSINESS - whether it be not-for-profit or for-profit – to a quiet residential neighbourhood like ours is wrong. The Whalley Food Bank serves 1000 customers per week and, in order to do this, gets multiple deliveries by a 53’ trailer truck per week, which then need to get offloaded by forklift. This will not only mean that traffic and noise levels will increase exponentially, but also that our community will be flooded by streams of people on a daily basis, most of whom have no idea that our neighbourhood even exists right now. Taking into account that the present location of the Food Bank is on ‘the Whalley strip’, it is very possible that some of the individuals who will find their way to our neck of the woods will also bring more crime to this new location and to our Strata Corporation, with possibly disastrous consequences for the safety and well-being of our residents, including children. The fact that the proposed new building will be equipped with extensive and state-of-the-art security systems confirms that certain risks are being taken into consideration based on past and present experiences at the Whalley location! A food bank doing business out of an enormous industrial building (20,000 square feet!) is just is not a compatible neighbour with our wonderful and quiet residential neighbourhood!! Apart from the associated nuisances of at least 1 year of construction, the possible implications to the safety and well-being of our residents and their property and the influx of thousands of new people to our area on a daily basis, this very likely will also affect our property values, unit selling prices and the overall attractiveness of our properties to potential buyers. For all those reasons and more, I oppose the proposed rezoning of this land and the construction of this monster building at 10553 148 Street - City of Surrey File 7918-0203-00).
