Residents of San Luis, AZ Denied Democracy: Let Alejandrina Run
The Issue
If the respect and dignity of the political process of the United States is to be upheld then Alejandrina Cabrera must be allowed to run for the City Council of San Luis, Arizona. San Luis mayor Juan Carlos Escamilla’s attempt to use court rulings that deny an AMERICAN CITIZEN of her RIGHTS as an American are a threat to society and yet another dangerous precedent to come from the state of Arizona.
Alejandrina Cabrera had successfully filed for petition to run for City Council and yet she has still been denied the opportunity to let the people of San Luis decide for themselves if she is to represent them. Mayor Escamilla has twisted an Arizona state law that states, "a person who is unable to speak, write and read the English language" can be denied the right to seek public office. According to NPR, “Cabrera's legal team has argued that she is able to speak, write and read in English — and without official criteria around language proficiency, her level of English should not prevent her from seeking public office any more than her race or IQ.” And although Cabrera has acknowledged in a recent press conference that her English is not perfect, she says, "But it's perfect for this position in San Luis, Ariz., because the people speak both language, but the people prefer Spanish."
It must be remembered that Alejandrina Cabrera led two unsuccessful recall campaigns against Mayor Escamilla. Speaking of the mayor, Cabrera told area news, The Sun, "He can't take away my constitutional rights, and if he takes away my rights, he takes away the rights of the community."
The democratic process of the United States of America allows for the people, we the voters, to decide who will and will not represent us. This is not a matter for the mayor or the courts to decide. If the people of San Luis do not want Cabrera to represent them because of her ability to speak English or any other reason then it is up to them and them only to exercise their rights as American citizens and show up to vote. Whether you are for or against Alejandrina Cabrera is not the issue - you must be for our democratic process above all else.
