The aceqiua system is unique to New Mexico. It not only has provided sustainable agriculture for 100s of years but also has provided a way of life for its users and maintained the natural landscapes through out New Mexico. It provided for the first legal frame work in the United States. It is now threatened by water rights transfers to non aceqiua users as water is being sold to the highest bidder. We believe that the UNITED NATIONS should recognize the New Mexico Acequia System as a UNESCO World Heritage and Cultural System.
