Hi,

My name is Shania Campbell, and I’m the mother of a medically fragile child who’s name is Jacqueline Duff. My daughters condition requires her to have around the clock care and because of limitations in our insurance, we have been denied various medical services that we need. In the state of Maryland there is a program called the Model Waiver Program, where kids that are medically fragile or require more support are able to qualify for Medicaid. In many other states, this program is called the Katie Beckett Waiver. The state of Maryland only has 200 seats available for this waiver— with a population of 6 million as of 2019 (according to the US Census Bureau) that 200 is not enough for all children to receive care. Once the 200 spots fill up, children like Jacqueline sit on the waitlist for care that they desperately need. Sometimes succumbing to their various ailments and driving the families that support them into large amounts of medical debt. The health insurance system is broken, and when it’s broken, medically fragile children and their parents pay the price.

This needs to change. The state of Connecticut has 325 seats with a population of just 3 million people (US Census Bureau). Maryland should follow suit and add at minimum 100 more seats to the Model Waiver Program.

Please sign our petition and get this changed.
