This local action raises concerns over Hale Farm and its operations and asks residents in Hulcott, Aylesbury and the surrounding Buckinghamshire area to encourage a transition to greener farming and business practices.

Farming animals for human consumption is extremely inefficient and degrades and pollutes the environment.

When we use resources to raise farmed animals and produce animal products, we are adding an extra step in the food production process. As we feed animals water, soy, and other grains, we are taking those finite resources away from humans who could use them directly.

At a time when water security is becoming an increasingly urgent issue in many parts of the world, this is a major waste that we need to address.

Animal farming contributes to a number larger of environmental issues that cause environmental degradation including:

• climate change (air pollution and harmful gases from urine and manure waste)
• deforestation (from large amounts of imported animal feed)
• soil degradation, irrigation problems, biodiversity loss and dead zones

Changing consumption habits, towards more plant-based foods and away from animal products, will bring opportunities for UK farmers as well as challenges. Food and agriculture policies should change to ensure farmers can adapt and benefit from these opportunities.

There is an increasing number of farmers who are moving to growing crops for the human consumption market, and their reasons vary – from financial, to ethical and environmental. 'Growing green' can be an excellent way to transition to more sustainable and profitable farming methods.
