On October 24th, the City Council of Geneva, New York will vote on its 2013
Budget which proposes a 36% reduction in funding for the Geneva Human Rights
Commission. We strongly believe this reduction does not represent the best
interest of our community.

In relation to most other City departments and agencies, the tax burden
associated with sustaining a viable Commission is miniscule, representing
the smallest agency line-item in the budget. Furthermore, we believe
Geneva's need for a local social justice agency is well documented -- with
the resulting benefits far outweighing the cost.

We love Geneva. We embrace its diversity, and we want our City government
to be responsive to the needs of all our citizens. So, we expect the worth
of the Commission and its staff to be expressed in our City budget.

Therefore, we are petitioning Geneva City Council to sustain the needs the
Commission in its 2013 Budget while allowing it to continue its effective
work in fair housing, the Geneva Community Compact (Race Dialogues for Youth
Program, Geneva Storytelling Project, DiverseCity Committee, etc.), and
other human rights related partnerships.

We, the undersigned, wholeheartedly support the Geneva Human Rights
Commission and ask that City Council do the same.
