Applewild School started this petition to Residents of Massachusetts

Over the past few years of our existence, mankind, especially in the U.S., has become addicted to plastics. This material is everywhere; in bags, cups, silverware, and straws. Many efforts have been made, individually and on larger scales, to lower our plastic consumption. However, it is still not enough. Despite all of the action that is being taken, plastic is still a pervasive presence in our lives.

The community at Applewild School has decided to take matters into our own hands, on a small scale. We are petitioning to the Fitchburg MA governing body to ban certain types of marketing plastics, such as plastic silverware and bags. As an alternative for this, we propose that stores use biodegradeable materials instead of plastic bags. The production of these materials is not harmful to the environment and don't take a long time to decompose. We know it isn’t enough, but we hope it is a start. A finished copy is not yet drafted, but here is what our petition will include:

-A tax on plastic bags used in stores

-An alternative to plastic bags, things like biodegradable bags and materials

-A reduction of plastic silverware at fast food restaurants, ice cream parlors, and any other places that supply plastic goods

We hope you will consider signing our petition, and try out some of our suggestions for reducing plastic consumption in your life:

-If possible, try not to eat at places you know use plastic

-Use reusable containers in your home

-Use reusable water bottles

-Try not to buy plastic silverware and straws

-Educate others about the dangers plastic poses to animals and the environment when not properly disposed of

-Recycle anything you can

-Use biodegradable materials

Thank you for supporting our cause!
