Sidney Cooper Weston Fountain has been sited in the Bruce Porter gardens at the corner of Wear Bay Road and Wear Bay Crescent for the last 97 years. It was moved to allow the WW1 monument in the middle of Remembrance Hill.

This beautiful fountain was erected in memory of SIdney Cooper Weston who helped keep a roof over families heads. He was well liked by a lot of people including the local fishermen and their families of the harbour. The fountain had to be moved from the Leas to allow for the war memorial. Documented evidence says Cllr Ms Weston and Mrs Gamble-Wood the two remaining sisters were given a choice between Harbour Street or East Cliff site.  They chose East Cliff. There are those who say the fountain was dumped on the site. Either way the fountain has sat there for almost 100 years. It’s centenary on this site will be in 2022.

This is a much loved fountain, it has been in situ for longer than it was ever on the Leas. It is part of Harbour Ward and should remain where it is.

It has come to light that this monument is more precious than previously known. It has recently been listed as a grade II fountain. Some people wish the monument to be moved possibly somewhere in town where it would be more visible to the wider public.

We would like to see the monument fully restored to its former glory. But following some local responses to keep the fountain where it is. We need your help to keep the fountain where it is and restore it to its former glory. Please sign this petition.
