Katy Fry started this petition to Residents of Columbia City

Recently, at First Fridays, the Columbia City Chief of Police was walking around and informing residents that brought their dogs that they would need to remove their dogs because, as per a city ordinance, pets are not allowed at any special events. After doing some investigating, Columbia City Ordinance 100.05 under Event Safety states:

"In order to ensure the health and safety of all participants the following safety standards shall be followed by event providers and participants.

   (A)   No pets will be allowed in any of the event areas, including but not limited to sidewalks, streets, alleys, and tents. This does not include the private dwellings of event staff."

This includes all events. First Fridays, car shows, the weekly farmer's market, parades, the Christmas Nativity walk...etc.

I wish to submit a request to the City Council and the Mayor to amend this section of the ordinance to allow leashed dogs at special events. It would be so helpful to have a petition signed by as many local Columbia City supporters to accompany it!

First, this ordinance is not widely known, so there are already people that are non-compliant without being aware they are breaking rules. We walk our dogs on the city streets every day. Second, our dogs are our families. If they are restrained on a leash, they should be welcome at any event. Many of the events that have sales vendors even have items for sale specifically for dogs. They are cute, they are happy, they are our family! They are allowed on our streets, they are allowed in our homes, they are allowed in our parks... Allow them at our events!
