A third application for the redevelopment of the former Clitheroe Community Hospital and former Clitheroe Union Workhouse has been submitted by the NHS Property Services Ltd. (NHSPSL).Once again this seeks to demolish the remaining Heritage Asset buildings to enable the provision of more residential development. Clitheroe Civic Society (CCS) believes there is an alternative to demolition of all these building which are of great significance to the social history of the Borough.
In the two previous applications it has been demonstrated, once via CCS and once via NHSPSL, that the conversion of some of the existing buildings is possible. Such an approach would still enable development of the site and retain at least one of these historic assets. All who care for the social, architectural and communal heritage of Clitheroe are urged to confirm their opposition to this proposal and urge NHSPSL to rethink this approach. If they do not then your support for a refusal of this application by Ribble Valley Planning Committee is sought.
CCS is not against the redevelopment of this site - only the approach - which, if approved, will see another important physical reminder of our social and communal history lost for ever. Full details of the scheme, and CCS's detailed objection to it, can be viewed on line at https://www.ribblevalley.gov.uk/planningApplication/search by entering the application ref no. 3/2106/1185.
