Impeach Chris Bezaire of Cape May
Impeach Chris Bezaire of Cape May
Domestic abuser, Chris Bezaire, is not fit to serve on Cape May’s City Council. Why?
As many of you already know, back in October 2020, Amanda Francis created a Facebook post in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness, discussing her history with domestic abuse. Before that day, Amanda’s story was kept quiet to protect her children while she had to rebuild her life. She had the courage to be completely open and honest, even naming her abuser. This action came just after she found out the abuse was continuing and Bezaire was continuing to harass other women, even someone who was roughly the age of her own children. These other women followed Amanda’s lead, sharing their experiences and gaining the courage to attempt to help other women who may encounter this man or others like him. The now “Councilman” Bezaire obtained a lawyer against the women speaking out as a scare tactic. He filed temporary restraining orders against two of his former girlfriends including Amanda, as well as filing a civil lawsuit against these same two women and two additional women naming “cyber harassment” as the issue. All the while, Bezaire was still harassing the women through fake email, fake Facebook accounts, and fake phone numbers .The two cases were an attempt to silence the four women from speaking out publicly in regard to the domestic abuse, harassment, and stalking. Two of the women were abused by Bezaire. The two other women were simply sharing posts from this page and domestic violence statistics.
Bezaire does not deny the truthfulness of the statements of which he complains to the court. Rather, complains about “negative things” and “negative statements” and “negative comments” that will negatively affect his political career, among other things. This man is a public figure, first as a candidate for the City of Cape May Council and now as an elected Councilman.
Bezaire may want to escape his history of abuse, but that history is relevant to his fitness to serve as an elected official. Survivors are free to disclose the history of violence that he wishes keep hidden.
The courts of this State should not be available for domestic violence perpetrators who now want to run for public office and to use those same courts to stop survivors from truthfully speaking about the domestic violence they experienced. After months of not being able to speak about this issues at hand, after thousands of dollars spent to protect their freedom of speech, after countless fake facebook accounts, emails and verbal abuse on behalf of Bezaire during this period of time, their charges have been dropped against the four women. On January 4th, Bezaire voluntarily dropped the civil lawsuit against everyone except Amanda Francis. A day later, Amanda retained council, someone who was willing to take initiative on this case. It took 36 hours and two thorough letters to Bezaire’s lawyer from Amanda’s new lawyer for Bezaire to make the decision to drop the civil suit against Amanda as well. These last few months have just been another way for Bezaire to further harass his victims and utilize his new found position in a way to fulfill his needs to feel powerful. THIS IS NOT GOING TO STOP and there needs to be action. Numerous other women have come forward with stories of abusive behavior toward them by Bezaire, but conveyed that they are fearful of what the repercussions may be if they share their truth and make their stories public - just as Amanda did three months ago.
Help be the change we need to see.
