Let's stop speeding and noise from vehicles in Bristol, VT
Traffic speed, unsafe operation, and traffic noise in Bristol have increased in recent years resulting in a diminished quality of life for those of us who live here. Studies have shown that traffic noise can lead to cardiovascular stress, for example, and a lower quality of life. And speed and unsafe operation put us all at risk.
Residents have observed the following:
- Speeders on West, Main, East, North, South, and Hewitt. Pine, and Mountain Streets,
- Excessive acceleration, including wheel spinning at intersections such as Prince/Mountain, East/Mountain, Main/North/South, Shaw’s/Walgreen’s exits to North and Main, and at other intersections in the neighborhoods,
- Vehicles with exhaust systems designed to produce excess noise,
- Loud motorcycles and loud operation of same,
- Trucks speeding and using engine braking in the village.
Given these observations, we are asking the Select Board to commission a study to develop recommendations to reduce these conditions and return Bristol to a more livable community. Suggestions so far include, but should not be limited to:
- Changing the village speed limit to 25 mph,
- Establishing an enforceable noise ordnance,
- Developing workable enforcement preceded by a public education campaign.
