Petitioning Bay Head Borough:  Acquire Land for Parking and Green Space at Lake/Bridge Avenue

 A parcel of land in Bay Head, bordering Twilight Lake and Scow Ditch, has been the subject of successive proposals and ongoing debate over several years for a proposed development known as "Bay Head Shoppers Village."

 Our vibrant and growing business district is sorely lacking parking and loading/unloading areas for existing business and the safe circulation of pedestrians; and would also be forever enhanced through the addition of a waterfront public green-space.

Therefore, we urge the Borough of Bay Head to:  Actively seek to acquire a portion of this property for these purpose using a combination of such funding sources as Green Acre dollars, County Open-Space grants, Public Trust funding and/or other readily available funding, as this land represents an unparalleled resource for community enjoyment and to support the successful functioning of our existing commercial center.

We recommend:

Reserving a portion of the property to uphold the existing parking and loading-zone requirements of businesses now located on this lot;
Creating additional municipal parking spaces, landscaped to buffer the adjacent residential setting and compliment the setting along Twilight Lake.
Creating a dedicated green-space to enjoy water views, indigenous plant species, and a welcoming place for shoppers and the community to rest and enjoy the lake.

We further recommend that a committee of residents help to identify and secure the ample sources of public trust and other funding now available to help make this a reality.

A large centrally-located property like this may never again be available in Bay Head and would uniquely serve parking, loading, and green open-space needs for our community, while supporting the vision of our Master Plan.  We urge the Borough Council to take immediate steps to pursue this opportunity.
