Rachel Jones started this petition to Somerset County Council Highways (South Somerset) and

Langport has 3 zebra crossings by the primary school/Tesco, in the centre of town and on Bow St. Anyone who uses these crossings regularly knows that very often cars fail to stop for those crossing or waiting to cross.  Using these crossings can feel dangerous and in October 2018 a local resident was very sadly killed by a car that failed to stop at the crossing closest to the primary school and Tesco.

Poor lighting, parked cars, a 20mph sign obscured by bushes, and the proximity of the crossing to the Tesco junction are factors which may distract drivers at the Tesco crossing. The crossing on Bow St is particularly bad for drivers failing to stop despite being on a clear stretch of straight road. Speeding at either end of the town is also an issue.

I am calling for improvements to be made to all three crossings to improve their safety for residents and visitors to Langport, for the benefit of the whole community.

Activity on this campaign so far:

In March 2020, I took this to Langport Town Council members who recognised this as a significant issue for the town and voted unanimously to take it to the County Council who have responsibility for crossings.

In May 2020 Somerset County Council Highways replied that changing the zebra crossings would be costly. They could be considered under a Small Improvement Scheme (SIS). This scheme must be promoted by a County Councillor. Submissions for this scheme is closed at the moment. Clare Paul, County Councillor and she said she would log it with the SIS team ready for when the next round is open.

The Headteacher of Huish Espiscopi Primary School, Tiffany Doughty-Davis has expressed support for crossing improvements, particularly the one closest to the school which pupils are using in increased numbers due to changes in pupil movement around the school due to Covid-19.

By signing this petition you are calling for Langport Town Council and Clare Paul, County Councillor to lobby on our behalf for:

- Improvements to all 3 crossings in Langport which may include changing from Zebra to light-operated Pelican crossings

- A review into the efficacy of other traffic management in the town (e.g. 20mph signs)

Thank you for your support
