Save the Manly to Palm Beach Coast Walk art installation program...before it's too late!

A group of councillors on Northern Beaches Council is trying to stop the construction of public artworks on the 36km Manly to Palm Beach Coast Walk and rob our artists of already allocated money.  The vision for the artworks is popular in the community and has been supported by the majority of Independent councillors.  A crucial vote will take place on Tuesday 16 June at an extraordinary meeting of the Northern Beaches Council.

A mischievous misinformation campaign is being conducted to belittle the project and the worth of our 7000 artists.  You may have seen the image of a giant coronavirus on Manly Beach doing the rounds on social media.  Opponents to public art are pretending this nonsensical image is a real proposal.  Don't be's not!  When I was the ABC's National Arts Reporter, I witnessed many such clumsy attempts to undermine our arts and cultural life.

Planning of the coast walk and the art installations has been going on since 2016.   Many talented artists have been anticipating designing  artworks to be commissioned by the Council.  These will be the crowning glory of what is destined to become a world-class attraction. The "Oceanides" sculpture at Fairy Bower, pictured above, is an example of this. (photo copyright AM Nicholson)

If the artworks don't go ahead, our artists will suffer financially and we will all be much the poorer for it.
