Molly Diamond started this petition to Resident Assistants at Western Carolina University

As the Resident Assistant application is now open, it has come to our attention the importance of the position of “RA”. Words like “Inspirational, Honorable, Extraordinary” are currently used on posters to recruit future Resident Assistants, so why is this position so unrecognized in comparison to other positions on campus? Positions such as athletics and Student Government Association are all recognized at graduation while crossing the esteemed stage. Something must be said for the effort, hard work and dedication for positions such as ours.

"The RA position is one of the premier leadership positions not only at Western Carolina University but at schools all over the country." This is the description for the RA position on Western Carolina University's website. We are required to go through an interview process, a multiple week training session, as well as taking a required for-credit class course to become a RA. I feel, as well as many other Resident Assistants, that our academic effort should be realized. We are held to a higher standard of expectations than other students as well as having an academic requirement to uphold.

Resident Assistants are the backbone of the residence hall. We help maintain the wellbeing of our residents, as well as provide a supportive, safe environment where residents can live out their college journey. As we cross the stage now, we feel that our hard work and dedication to our school and fellow students go unrecognized. We would like to cross that well-earned path into the future with our heads held high, knowing that our commitment to Western Carolina University has been acknowledged.
