Rescind Unjust Debt Collection in West Kelowna

Rescind Unjust Debt Collection in West Kelowna

The Issue

For the hardworking families and dedicated citizens of West Kelowna, BC, a letter from the City Hall has brought an unexpected and unjust burden. This personal struggle isn't just my own; it resonates with every neighbor, every community member who strives tirelessly to maintain and improve our shared lives. I am calling on West Kelowna City Hall to rescind their letter regarding an exorbitant debt collection aimed at homeowners.

The troubling notice demands payment of over $2700 within a mere 31 days, leaving residents like us faced with harsh consequences. Failing to meet this deadline results in a 4.02% penalty applied over 25 years, skyrocketing the total to over $9000 due to compounded interest for the average homeowner. This is not a burden we accrued. Our city expects its citizens to shoulder a debt that was not of our making, negatively impacting our financial stability and peace of mind.

This demand is more than a financial strain. It is an erosion of trust between the local government and its people. For far too long, we have dedicated ourselves to fostering a vibrant, supportive community, only to be met with a financial obligation that threatens our ability to live fully and freely. The reality of this imposed charge is destabilizing, bringing unnecessary challenges to our community's resilience.

Our call to action is clear: West Kelowna City Hall must take responsibility for this debt and provide a fair solution that does not fall upon the residents unjustly. Transparency and collaboration in managing public funds are essential, and resolving such issues without placing undue strain on community members should be the benchmark of any fair governance.

I urge all citizens of West Kelowna and supporters of fair governance to stand with us by signing this petition. Your support can help voice our collective discontent and push for a more just and equitable resolution to this matter. Together, we can foster a stronger, more trusting relationship with our local government. Sign and make your voice heard to correct this injustice.

Quoting from a post on Facebook made by Scott Beaton: “ The rates we’ve been charged were increased based on the expected increased operating costs of the new system, using a rate study that is more than a decade old now. Because the plant opened later than expected we generated more money than they needed, which led to surpluses. These surpluses ...

That is a lot of money and I don’t recall being notified by the city of West Kelowna. We pay enough in Utility costs and now this. Paying for water that sometimes needs to be boiled or spending more on an in home water filtration systems or water bottles. It’s not right.

My daughter can not even drink water at her school now. But we are expected to pay a huge bill for this water we can’t drink or rely on its safety for our kids ?
