Mike Harris the former premier of Ontario has a long history of failing Canadians.

During their time in office, Mike "the knife" Harris and Paul "axeman" Martin gutted the capacity of the state to collect revenues through tax cuts for the wealthy. Meanwhile, they slashed social programs and in Ontario brutalized the education system to such an extent that it still hasn't recovered.

Harris’s program, the “Common Sense Revolution,” changed Ontario overnight. He slashed program spending. He slashed social assistance. He slashed taxes. Thousands lost their jobs. Others became homeless. Many died. It’s all in the history books.

Mike Harris now chairs Chartwell, The private organization who are responsible for the largest percentage of Covid Deaths among some of our most vulnerable Canadians. Senior Citizens living in Long Term Care Homes.

Giving this monster, who continually puts the profits of himself and his rich friends above the better interests of the rest of Canada is delusional.

Suze Morrison, Ontario NDP MPP for Toronto Centre, tweeted Harris “is the last person” she would put on a list of Order of Ontario appointees announced New Year’s Day.“He laid the groundwork for privatizing long-term care. At the helm of Chartwell this year oversaw record profits — literally profiteering off a pandemic while our elders died,” she tweeted. “In a moment in time when we’ve lost thousands of seniors to COVID-19 in these poorly managed, privatized homes, for the sake of profits, to recognize Mike Harris with this highest honour . . . is devastating to the families of people who have lost their loved ones in long-term care this year.”

Mike Harris does not represent the best that Ontario has to offer, and we do not support his nomination to the Order of Ontario.
