Require pay increase for Madison County special education staff
The Issue
Working as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) in a special needs classroom in Madison County, Alabama, I've encountered firsthand the immense dedication and commitment every member of our educational team brings to their role. Each day, we confront not only the challenge of creating an inclusive learning environment for our students, but also the personal risks and the physical and emotional demands that come with supporting students with diverse needs. Despite our diligent efforts and unwavering focus on student success, we face another daunting challenge—financial instability.
Many of my colleagues, including special education teachers and paraprofessionals, who are essential to our students’ learning and development, earn salaries that do not reflect the critical nature of their roles. More worryingly, they do not earn a livable wage sufficient to manage basic necessities. Each day, we show up to work committed to making a difference, but our financial realities do not acknowledge or adequately reward our efforts.
A recent study highlighted by the National Education Association (NEA) reflects that teachers and educational staff often earn significantly less than professionals in other fields with similar educational backgrounds. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2023, the average wage for a special education paraprofessional is around $26,000 per year, which is far below the median wage necessary to support a family in the United States.
In light of these facts, we urge the Madison County School Board and the State of Alabama to re-evaluate and increase the compensation for special education teachers and paraprofessionals to align with the true value of their work. Investing in improved wages not only acknowledges the challenging and crucial work these educators do but also helps to prevent turnover, ensuring stability and continuity for the students who depend on us.
An increase in pay would serve as a testament that we value inclusive education and the professionals who make it possible. It would also enable our dedicated staff to focus on their essential duties without the constant worry of financial distress.
We call on you to stand in solidarity with the special education community in Madison County. Our teachers and paraprofessionals deserve pay that accurately reflects their invaluable contributions and the risks they take each day. Sign this petition to support improving wages for special education staff and show that we stand together in valuing the education of all students.
