Technology has rapidly changed the way we consume information. In some ways this has been beneficial by spreading information quickly and improving mobilization. In other ways, it has been very harmful by making misinformation easily available and largely unchecked. Political polarity is at an all time high and many people base their world view and opinions off of misinformation, as exemplified by the popularity of the QAnon conspiracy theory. This is primarily because spreading misinformation is very easy on social media. While social media companies cannot excessively censor users, people can become educated about media literacy so that they will be much less susceptible to misinformation.

Starting in California, Media Literacy coursework should be required in all public high schools. Just like Health and U.S. Government classes are required to graduate, a Media Literacy class would be as well. Students would develop skills to understand what makes a source reliable and would learn about how media is consumed, critiqued and created. This way, the next generations would go into the adult world much less susceptible to believing misinformation and more likely to base their world view and opinions on facts.

In many ways, technology has developed faster than people have been able to adapt. This means that society has to start taking significant steps toward better understanding new media so that the benefits can be reaped while minimizing the harm. This required coursework is a great step in the right direction.
