The Issue

On July 18, 2021, my world changed forever. My daughter, Destiny McClain, was senselessly murdered while waiting to order food in Arizona. Destiny's life was full of promise, torn away in an instant by an unknown assailant. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the investigation hit a roadblock. The camera footage captured the suspect's vehicle, but with only a view of the front, there was nothing to identify – no license plate to provide a lead, just a haunting, unanswered question.

This tragedy, deeply personal to me, highlights a crucial flaw in Arizona's current vehicle identification law. Arizona does not require vehicles to display a front license plate, a simple directive that could dramatically assist law enforcement in solving and potentially preventing crimes. As a grieving parent, I am left to wonder what could have been different if such a regulation was in place.

We are not alone in this fight. States such as Texas and California have implemented laws requiring front license plates, and they have experienced measurable benefits in terms of vehicle identification and crime resolution. According to research by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, having front plates greatly enhances law enforcement's capability to identify and apprehend offenders, a critical difference in hit-and-run cases, theft, and incidents like the one involving Destiny.

Putting this measure in place is not only about seeking justice for my daughter but is a step towards ensuring safety and accountability across Arizona. A policy change can be enacted through legislative action, championed by public support. By making front plates mandatory, we offer our citizens the added security of knowing that should the unthinkable happen, there are tools in place to aid in swift justice.

I urge you to join me in calling for this essential change. Let us demand that Arizona's lawmakers adapt their vehicle registration policies to include mandatory front license plates. By doing so, we are taking a step towards cutting the grief and uncertainty that too many families have had to endure. Together, we can make a difference. Sign this petition to support the adoption of mandatory front license plates in Arizona. Let us create a safer, more just environment for all our families. Sign today for change, for safety, for Destiny.
