The issue

My 8-year-old daughter is non-verbal and on the autism spectrum. As a mother, there is nothing more important to me than her safety and well-being. Unfortunately, I've seen too many heart-wrenching stories and videos online of children just like her being mistreated in environments where they should feel safe and protected. It keeps me up at night wondering if my daughter and her peers in special needs classrooms across California are truly safe.

The installation of cameras in these classrooms would provide a vital layer of accountability and transparency, ensuring that the educators and staff are providing the nurturing and supportive environment that every child deserves. Cameras are not about spying but rather about ensuring trust and safety for our most vulnerable students. It would allow for real-time monitoring and, if needed, serve as crucial evidence in any investigations of misconduct.

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Education indicate that nearly 7 million students, or 14 percent of all public school students, receive special education services. These students often cannot communicate what happens during their day at school, making them more susceptible to harm. Installing cameras can act as a deterrent to potential abuse and provide parents and guardians with peace of mind.

Moreover, a similar initiative implemented in Texas has shown positive results. Data from schools with classroom cameras reported a significant decrease in instances of abuse and misconduct. This evidence supports the need for California to take a proactive step in ensuring the safety and security of children in special needs classrooms.

By signing this petition, you are joining a growing community of concerned parents, educators, and advocates united in the belief that our special needs children deserve the highest level of protection. Let's make California a model for safety and accountability in special education.
