Require approval for clothing designs that are "inspired" by other cultures
Why this petition matters
This petition is directed primarily at large scale fashion designers/companies that mass-produce clothing for the mainstream and/or for public figures. Many fashion designers/companies have looked to cultural garments all around the world to influence their designs, however a line is drawn when these “inspirations” appropriate the culture that it is supposedly “inspired” from. An example of such appropriation is Summer Walker’s controversy with the appropriation of traditional Hmong jewelry as a sexual outfit.
This petition asks that designers/companies require approval from a figure belonging to the culture that they are drawing inspiration from. This figure must 1) belong to the culture and 2) be well-versed in the history and cultural significance of their culture. This would prevent cultural appropriation as somebody well-versed in the culture can sign off on the design as being actually inspired, appreciative of the culture, and appropriate. The names of the designer and approver must also be publicly listed. In the scenario that the clothing is still unacceptable and inappropriate, there is public record of who is responsible for the failure.
