The Issue

Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one of Nintendo's most popular games, features various decor items from different regions and time periods. While the game's celebration of diverse cultures and histories is admirable, it currently includes Imperial Japanese art and architecture. This inclusion is deeply troubling as it serves to disregard the traumatic history associated with Imperial Japan, which committed innumerable atrocities during the early 20th century.

The Imperial Japanese regime was responsible for egregious acts of genocide, forced labor, and sexual slavery, causing unimaginable suffering to millions across Asia. These historical facts are well-documented and acknowledged globally by historians and governments alike. However, the representation of such a brutal regime's aesthetics in a family-friendly game like Animal Crossing: New Horizons risks sanitizing and trivializing the horrors endured by countless individuals, many of whom are still alive today as witnesses and survivors.

By allowing these elements to remain within the game, Nintendo inadvertently fails to acknowledge the pain and significance of this period for numerous communities. Such representation can be damaging, particularly to the descendants of the victims, and can perpetuate a narrative that erases their lived experiences.

To address this issue, we urge Nintendo to remove all Imperial Japanese decor from Animal Crossing: New Horizons and to refrain from including similar elements in any future installments of the series. This change would not only demonstrate Nintendo's commitment to cultural sensitivity and responsibility but also honor the memories and histories of those who suffered.

Incorporating this adjustment could set a positive precedent for how historical themes are approached in video games and could encourage other developers to exercise similar mindfulness. Join us in urging Nintendo to acknowledge the sensitive nature of historical representation in their games and to make a proactive move towards historical accuracy and respect.

Please sign this petition to support this important change and to advocate for a more inclusive and considerate gaming experience for players worldwide.
