Why this petition matters

Started by Andrew Sidwell

In February the Herald Sun ran a story with the headline
"Dirty Doc who had sex with 13-year old girl avoids extra jail time".
They also wrote
"A court has ruled a former regional emergency doctor who had sex with a girl, 13 and described it as "amazing" should not get a harsher sentence."

By using the term sex they portray the crime as consensual. Not only that there is no such thing as an adult having sex with a 13 year old, it's always rape. This continued inaccurate media coverage of sexual assault  through biased reporting and words shifts blame to the victim.

I am asking that by International Women's Day 2023 News Corp Australia develop and implement an editorial charter for reporting on rape and sexual assault.

As a bare minimum it should cover

  1. Committing to no longer using  consensual and pleasurable language, like "had sex with."
  2. Removal of victim-blaming language e.g being drunk, flirty, describing her clothes, or being a sex-worker. None of this makes the victim/survivor deserving of sexual assault.
  3. Talk about the crime and who committed it in an active voice "He raped her"

These are just starters sourced from this helpful article
I'm sure the talented journalists at News Corp Australia could come up with more.

Please sign this petition and I will deliver to Michael Miller News Corp Australia Chairman when we have enough signatures to show him why this is important and many of us want them end this practice.
