Repurposing the Indigenous Studies requirement in British Columbia
Why this petition matters
As Canada begins to focus on reconciliation, it is evident that study of Indigenous history and culture will become salient to one's perception of Canadian society. We firmly believe that understanding and being informed about this is important, but that will come at a cost. Not only will this new graduation requirement shift many students' education plans and disrupt their ambitions, we don't believe that this is necessary to be put in place as an entire course. The government of British Columbia needs to find a way to incorporate student needs and wants and find an equilibrium- one in which Indigenous Studies is included as well. That's why we believe that this education should be just integrated in regular social studies classes.
The government of British Columbia needs to start thinking about student body.
