Show your support for LGBT Missourians

LGBT people in Missouri are under attack by a bill which would put a measure on the November ballot allowing businesses to deny services or goods to same-sex couples. This means that a caterer, florist, hotelier, jeweler, photographer, printer, publisher, rental vendor, tailor, or any other business operating in the public sphere could refuse to serve a gay couple.

The bill is halfway to passage: it's already passed the Missouri Senate. In order to stop it, we need to let Representative Jim Hansen know that there are people who live in or near his district (or who have ties to his area) who are opposed to this bill. He will be voting on the bill in the Emerging Issues Committee any day.

My husband and I were discriminated against by a business in Monroe City, Missouri. We submitted our wedding announcement to my hometown newspaper, the Lake Gazette. The publishing company Lakeway Publishers, which owns the Lake Gazette, declined to print our wedding announcement until we petitioned and campaigned publicly. After 85 days, it was finally printed.

LGBT Missourians shouldn't have to petition or publicly campaign for businesses to serve them. It should simply be the right thing to do! No customer should be denied goods or services, whatever their race, religion, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
