In the state of Utah, the hours required for cosmetologists to get their license through a formal Cosmetology school is 1600 hours. The required hours to get a license through a private apprenticeship is 2500. In 2013, the required hours for school students were lowered from 2000 to 1600, but the apprenticeship hours remained at 2500.

In case you are unfamiliar with an apprenticeship, it is a third party program that an aspiring cosmetologist can choose to do in which you learn the same curriculum as those in school, but it is one-on-one teaching, in a real salon environment. It is an incredible path to take, and opens up many opportunities for an elevated education and provides a jump-started path for cosmetologists to start their career after taking the same tests as those in school do and getting their license.

Considering the incredible education that is being provided, and the fact that the curriculum is the same in either path, it seems unreasonable that there are nearly 1000 more hours required of apprentices. I think it's possible that because apprenticeships are so uncommon, the issue of the hours being so much higher has been overlooked. I don't believe that there is any particular reason for the number they've chosen for the required hours, and I wholeheartedly believe that apprentices can go on to elevate the cosmetology community here in Utah in an incredible way, after 1600 hours.

My representative, Brad Daw, is very willing to help resolve this issue that is important to me, as a current apprentice and would like to know how many people in our community agree that this should be changed. So please, if you are a cosmetologist or a cosmetology student here in Utah, take a second to sign the petition so we can continue to provide incredible services to our clients!
